Check engine light diagnosis in Star, ID
We test the system to find the real cause, not just read a code. Free estimates, and a straight answer on what it needs.
Light on right now? Bring it by or call and we'll tell you straight whether it can wait.
Is it safe to keep driving?
A steady check engine light usually means the car is safe to drive, but don't ignore it. Something is off, and small problems get expensive when they sit. Get it scanned and diagnosed soon.
A flashing check engine light is serious. It usually means the engine is misfiring, which can damage the catalytic converter fast. Ease off the gas, don't drive far, and call us now.
What your check engine light means
The check engine light means your car's computer spotted something outside its normal range. It could be as small as a loose gas cap or a worn oxygen sensor, or as real as a misfire, a failing catalytic converter, or a fault in the charging and battery system. The light alone doesn't tell you which. Steady or flashing is the first clue, and diagnosing it is how you find out for sure.
A flashing light points to an active misfire that can damage the engine, so that one is a call-us-now. A steady light usually gives you a little time, but not forever.
A code read isn't a diagnosis
A parts store will read the code off your car for free, and that's a fine starting point. But a code is a symptom, not the answer. The same code can come from three different failures, and swapping the part the code names is how people spend money and still have the light on. We test the system to find the actual cause, then tell you straight what it needs. Sometimes that's a small fix, sometimes it points to engine repair, and sometimes it's nothing at all.
That honest read is the whole shop. One customer brought us a 1966 truck other places wouldn't touch. We looked it over, found nothing wrong, and charged nothing. We do the same on a brake problem or any job that walks in the door of our Star repair shop.
What a diagnosis costs

Want the common questions answered first? Our FAQ covers safe-to-drive, cost, and what the light means, or tell us what it's doing and we'll get you in.
Brought my 66 Chevy C-10 to these guys to diagnose an engine tick and they had an answer to me the next day, no charge… No attempts to sell me services I didn’t need. Told me straight everything is good to go as-is and have a nice day. Awesome.
