Batteries & electrical at Star Tire & Automotive, 207 S Star Rd, Star, Idaho

Car slow to start or dead in the driveway? Call or come in and we'll test it while you wait.

Will it start?

Starts slow or weak

A slow, lazy crank in the cold usually means the battery is on its way out. Drive it straight in and don't shut it off on the way, and we'll test it before you get stranded.

Won't start or totally dead

If it's clicking or dead, you may need a jump to get moving. Get one if you can and come straight in, or call us. We'll test the battery and the charging system to find out why it died.

Signs your battery is failing

Most car batteries last three to five years, and Idaho winters are hard on them. A cold morning is usually when a weak one finally quits. The tells: the engine cranks slow before it catches, the dash and headlights look dim, a battery warning light comes on, or you've had to jump it more than once.

A battery that's needed a jump twice will need a third. Better to catch it warm in the shop than dead in a cold parking lot. It's a quick check, and we're glad to do it while you're in for an oil change or any other work at our Star shop.

Battery or alternator? We test both

Here's what a parts store won't do: figure out why the battery died. Swapping in a new one is easy, but if the real problem is a failing alternator or a charging fault, the new battery will die too. So we test the whole charging system, not just the battery. Sometimes a dead battery is the start of it, and a check engine or charging light is part of the same story.

Estimates are free. We'll tell you straight whether you need a battery, a charging repair, or nothing yet. Questions on lifespan or cold starts? Our FAQ has them, or send us your vehicle and we'll get you in.

Get it tested if any of these sound familiar

  • The engine cranks slow or lazy before it starts, especially when it is cold.
  • Your headlights or dash lights look dim at idle.
  • A battery or charging warning light is on.
  • You've had to jump-start it more than once lately.
  • You're already in for tires or other work and it has been three years or more.

Dan and his team are awesome. Very reasonable and they do great work. They are always busy, but still manage to help you out in a timely manner. I strongly recommend if you are looking for dependable auto service outside of dealerships.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

How do I know if my battery is dying?

A slow crank when you start, headlights that dim at idle, a battery light on the dash, or a battery more than three to five years old are all signs. Cold snaps finish off weak batteries fast. We test the battery and the charging system, so you are not replacing a good battery when the real problem is the alternator.

Can you get me in today?

Often, yes, especially for tires, flats, batteries, and oil changes. We are a busy shop, so call ahead at (208) 286-9245 and we will tell you honestly what the day looks like.

Is it safe to drive with my check-engine light on?

A steady light usually means you can drive to us to get it scanned soon. A flashing light means stop driving and call, because it points to something that can damage the engine. When in doubt, call (208) 286-9245 and we will tell you straight.

Bring it by the corner.

Bring it in and we will tell you what it needs and what it does not, with the price up front.
