Signs your brakes need attention

Brakes warn you before they fail. A high squeal when you slow down is the wear tab telling you the pads are getting thin. A grinding, metal-on-metal sound means the pad is gone and you're into the rotor, which is a bigger bill the longer you wait. A soft or sinking pedal, a shudder when you stop, or the car pulling to one side are all reasons to have them looked at now.

Some of those signs overlap with other things. Pulling can be an alignment issue instead of brakes, and a dash warning light can point back to a whole different problem. We check the actual cause instead of guessing.

Pads, rotors, and when each needs replacing

Most brake jobs are pads, and most pads last somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles depending on how and where you drive. Stop-and-go around town wears them faster than highway miles. Rotors last longer and can often be resurfaced instead of replaced, if there's enough good metal left to do it safely.

There's no single mileage number that fits every car, so we measure yours and tell you what's actually left. If you've got plenty of pad, we'll say so and send you on your way, same as we would on any repair in the shop.

We show you the worn part before we replace it

Brakes are the classic service to get oversold on, because you can't see them and it's hard to argue with a safety scare. So we do the opposite. We bring you the worn pad or the scored rotor and show you, in your hand, why it needs to go. If it doesn't need to go, we don't touch it.

Estimates are free. We call with the number before we start, and we only fix what's worn. Still deciding? Our brake FAQ answers the common ones, or send us your car's details for a quote.

Bring it in if you notice any of these

  • A high squeal or squeak when you slow down.
  • A grinding or metal-on-metal sound when you brake.
  • A brake pedal that feels soft, low, or sinks to the floor.
  • The car pulling to one side when you stop, which can also be tires or alignment.
  • A shudder or pulsing in the pedal at higher speeds.

They were very transparent with the service details and made sure I understood and was comfortable with the service they would provide. Would love to use their service again.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

How do I know if my brakes need work?

Listen and feel. Squealing that comes and goes often means the pads are getting low. Grinding means metal on metal and you should come in now. A soft or low pedal, pulsing when you stop, or the car pulling to one side are all reasons to have them checked. We will look and give you the honest number before any work.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

Grinding means the pads are worn through and metal is scoring your rotors, which gets more expensive the longer you wait and stops you slower. Get it in soon. Call us at (208) 286-9245 and we will get you looked at.

Do you stand behind your work?

We honor the manufacturer warranties on the parts we install, and used tires carry a 10-day replacement warranty. If something is not right after we worked on it, bring it back and we will make it right.

Bring it by the corner.

Bring it in and we will tell you what it needs and what it does not, with the price up front.
